Class Description

This class extends the Earth Party Science Class, but instead of reading and writing, we will apply our knowledge to create art work, engaging with each weekly topic. We will also explore the work of other artists who created science-based art such as Ernst Haeckel. The weekly subjects include:

  • What’s inside an insect wing? Looking More Closely at Color and Pattern in Butterfly Wings
  • Leaves Explored: Journey Inside Common Leaves
  • Magical Mushrooms: More on Mushrooms and Creating a Mushroom Terrarium (with handmade mushrooms!)
  • Ocean Unicorns: The Amazing Narwhal

Media includes drawing, painting, mixed media, and natural fibers. Students that have not taken our semester class are welcome to join. Other than enjoying art and science, there are no prerequisites.

  • Smithsonian Natural History Book (Optional, but it’s an amazing book!; we take funds for our book boxes. We have several copies left in our store. Watch for a coupon to save $$ if purchased through our store. Here is our store link.)
  • An activities material list will be sent in December, and each week prior to each class. Generally speaking, students will need:
    • 12×18 white mixed media paper (bigger paper is better!)
    • Oil pastels
    • Watercolors and brushes
    • Salt
    • Kerr jar with lid (pasta sauce-sized jar with a lid, or larger)
    • Acrylics
    • Glue gun and glue sticks
    • White glue
    • Mosses, rocks, small sticks
