Magical Math: Exploration and Inspiration for Early Elementary

Fall Semester (12 weeks)

“Miss Jennifer teaches a gently structured, multi-layered approach to Math and Language Arts. I will describe it in layers:

First: Lessons are taught in a personalized format using math manipulatives and games as well as on screen 1 on 1 math activities.

Second: Free discussion between our Daughter and Miss Jennifer of math concepts covered in the lesson for full comprehension.

Third: A beautiful poem is chosen and read by both Miss Jennifer and our Daughter.

It is truly a unique experience and a wonderful way to learn.”

Course Description

This class is all about discovering the wonderful world of numbers and delving into the big ideas of math. We will read stories and poems to help illustrate mathematical concepts. Students will experience math through hands-on activities and games. We will develop connections between numerals and visuals, and develop math fluency through flexible thinking about numbers including detecting and using patterns and explaining our thinking using modeling and drawing. Students will be encouraged to strategize and plan and create a visual model to explain their thinking to others. Many activities will involve open-ended mathematical questions (which have more than one answer). The use of open ended questions leads to creative thinking and mathematical fluency.
