Christine Echeverri

Carrier Shell Classes

We provide homeschool curriculum, classes, and creative opportunities for vivid, transformative family-based learning.    Tackling niche, but engaging avenues of study, we ask the question, “Why not?”

In my classes, I pull from multiple disciplines, incorporating in-class, hands-on activities.

“Christine Echeverri was a terrific teacher in [her] World History class. She kept things moving in her online class, both sharing a great deal of information as well as engaging the students in discussions, surveys, games, and activities. Her assignments incorporated interesting reading and allowed students to tackle bigger projects on a week by week schedule. She is a wonderful teacher, and I highly recommend any of her curriculum; it is thoughtfully designed with the love of learning at the center.

Christine Echeverri, a native Angeleno, grew up steeped in experience that gave her a deep appreciation for cultural diversity. As a child, her education covered a wide spectrum of options, from private school to public visual arts magnets. She later went on to receive a B.A. in an interdisciplinary program — World Arts and Cultures — from UCLA and a M.A. in Economics from Cal State L.A.

She credits her mother and grandmother for exposing her as a child to the richness of California’s cultures and environment through private art lessons, museum trips, and countless other explorations. Her grandmother imparted to her a sense of wonder and enchantment about the world, and provided a living example of putting one’s passion into action as, driven solely by curiosity, she tirelessly explored the culture, architecture, history and geology of southern California.

Christine is the mother of three children, whom she homeschooled for a number of years. The experience of integrating educational topics to guide learning in a way that was organic and holistic set her on a course to developing her own curriculum for the study of California history, California Out of the Box.

In 2020, she published Earth Party!  An Early Introduction to the Linnaean System of Classification of Living Things Unit Study for grades 1-6.  Available at the Carrier Shell Curriculum Bookstore and Amazon, the curriculum features a teacher’s guide and a student book.

In 2019-20, while signed on as a coach with Los Angeles-based Home School Coaches, she taught her first in-person California history class — California Out of the Box — at FUNdamentals homeschool co-op in Arcadia.  Since the onset of the pandemic, she has developed several hands-on online classes for homeschoolers such as California Out of the Box, Earth Party Biology, Earth Story Ecology, and World History Out of Your Window.  Her world history class recalls all that she learned and experienced on trips abroad to Asia, Europe, and North Africa, her undergraduate years at UCLA studying World Arts and Cultures, and a high school architecture workshop with architect Frank Gehry.

In her classes, her first and foremost desire is for students to love and connect with the course material, as she does. Secondly, she hits the ground running! In each of her courses there is so much to explore, and students will do so using a combination of creative projects, writing, in-class sharing, and review. The work is carefully planned with the goal of continuing to engage students — not burning students out through writing endless reports.

Her newest class, Earth Story Ecology: Life on our Amazing Planet, picks up where Earth Party Science ends. It begins the discussion of WHERE life forms live — global biomes, microecosystems, and places like our cities under the category of “urban wildlife.” This class will be a literature approach and offer many avenues for students to explore life right where they live. Her classes are posted in a number of sections found on this website.

Christine always guides the students not in just the course but also in how to present before an audience, how to publish your own book, encourages them with gift cards, and bonus points. She always takes feedback of both the students and the parents and keeps improving her class.”
